HOLTVILLE — The California Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal wreck early Sunday that took the life of a 35-year-old Holtville man.
The man’s name was not released pending notification of relatives. Highway Patrol Officer Pablo Torrez said the driver was heading east on a dirt road south of Evan Hewes Highway when the accident occurred.
The driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed west of Anderholt Road, Torrez said.
Imperial County Sheriff’s authorities received a 3:48 p.m. call Saturday about man in his 20s who initially appeared to be unconscious near the Highway 78 and Osborne Overlook.
A REACH helicopter was called out but cancelled shortly afterward when it was determined that the man was dead at the scene, according to a log entry at the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.
The log entry did not specify whether the man’s death was related to any recreational off-road activity or how he died.
Niland man arrested
Sheriff’s authorities arrested a 31-year-old Niland man Saturday on suspicion of being under the influence at Highway 111 and Scott Road.
The man, identified in the sheriff’s log entry as Cesar Castro Cendejas, was arrested at 6:08 p.m. for having a felony bench warrant.
Cendejas was held at the county jail with bail set at $25,000, the log entry reported.
