The Imperial County Superior Court has a new judge as Ruth Bermudez Montenegro was sworn in during a brief ceremony Tuesday.

Montenegro, a former Imperial County assistant county counsel, was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown late last month.

“I feel honored to serve our community,” said Montenegro after the ceremony, adding she will do this service “with justice and professionalism.”

Montenegro replaces Imperial County Superior Court Judge Barrett Foerster, whose seat became vacant when he died in November 2010.

Montenegro will begin her duties today.

But Montenegro, who before the appointment was running for the seat she now holds, will have to continue campaigning for the June elections, she said.

“It’s certainly a challenge,” Montenegro said referring to her campaign, “and one (that) I need to work hard to retain my seat.”
