Valley Police Beat: Border Patrol seizes 9 pounds of meth

SALTON CITY - El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents seized about 9 pounds of methamphetamine Wednesday at the Highway 86 checkpoint between Westmorland and Salton City, according to a press release.

A Crucero passenger bus was referred to secondary inspection around 7 p.m., and a canine team alerted to the inside of the bus.

Bus passengers were asked to exit the bus, and five vacuum-sealed plastic packages of methamphetamine were subsequently found in a backpack in an overhead compartment.

The methamphetamine has a combined weight of about 9 pounds and estimated street value of more than $300,000.

A 32-year-old male lawfully-admitted permanent resident was arrested as a suspect in the case and was turned over, along with the narcotics, to the DEA for further investigation.

Man stopped with drugs at border

CALEXICO - A man allegedly tried to carry 325 grams of marijuana across the border in the U.S. but was arrested by authorities Tuesday morning, according to Calexico police call logs.

Jose Camarillo Padilla, 51, was arrested on suspicion of possession of narcotics for sale and transportation of narcotics.

Prison inmate dies

CALIPATRIA - An inmate was found dead in his cell at Calipatria State Prison on Wednesday morning.

The cause of death has yet to be determined, and identification was not released pending notification of next of kin.
