  • Mid-Valley Sundevils' Justin Cordova carries the ball against Mexicali Halcones during a Pop Warner game, in the Junior Midget division, at Southwest High in El Cento on Saturday.

The Imperial Valley League Pop Warner Football Championships were held Saturday at Southwest High School.

Four games were played, one per respective division, with the winners advancing to the first round of regional playoffs, to be hosted by the Southern Arizona Football Conference in Phoenix.

Unfortunately, none of the Mid-Valley Sun Devils football teams qualified, not even coach Brian Lewis’s vaunted, MVP Junior Midget (ages 10-12) squad.

They lost a hard-fought contest to the Halcones of Mexicali that went down to the last seconds, 42-39.

“(The Halcones) were the only team that beat us this year,” said Lewis. “In our first game against them, during the second week of the season, we lost 32-0. We told ourselves that we weren’t going to get beat that bad again, so we studied up on them, watched a lot of video. We lost a close game, but this was a good season, and I couldn’t have asked for more from my players.”

In the Junior PeeWee division (ages 8-10), the Yuma Scorpions defeated the Sun Devils. The remaining games were all won by Halcones teams. At the PeeWee level (ages 9-11), they beat the Sun Devils, while their Midget team (ages 11-14) trumped the Mexicali Zorros. Scores for these games were unavailable.
