Two local educators and a district official were honored by the Association of California School Administrators for their commitment to the education of local students at an award ceremony in San Diego on Friday.

Doug Kline, superintendent of Calipatria Unified School District, Patty Marcial, principal of Heber Elementary School and Carla Rayon, director of human resources at the El Centro Elementary School District, were honored as administrators of the year in their respective fields by the ACSA Region 18 officials.

Region 18, which encompasses San Diego and Imperial Counties, aims to support the state’s educational leaders and ensure all children have the essential skills and knowledge needed to excel.

Kline said he was extremely shocked when he learned of his distinction and immediately thought of the people that work with him.

“I am honored and humbled by the recognition,” said Kline. “It is a great reflection of the quality of people that work in the (Calipatria) school district. I’m just the lucky guy that gets to stand up in front of everyone and accept the award.”

Kline said he felt the award provided a great snapshot of where the district was, where it is and where it’s going.

“I think it paints a clear picture of what we feel is important in the education and interests of our students,” Kline said. Marcial said she was also surprised and humbled by the award and what it means for the small community of Heber.

“I’m glad to see that the name of the school and the community is getting out there in a positive way,” Marcial said. “It’s a great feeling because I’m from Heber and I went to school here.”

In addition to seeing Heber in the news, Marcial said she was thrilled to be one of three Imperial Valley school officials recognized.

“I admire what (Kline and Rayon) do,” Marcial said. “I’m so glad that there are three of us representing the Valley because we can send a message to other that the Imperial Valley does exists and that we’re doing great things and that we have great administrators.”

Rayon could not be reached for comment.
