A while back there was a accident that claimed the life of one person in Calexico, in the shopping center known as Las Palmas. What has happened during this time, and what happened to the other victims? — Wondering, Brawley We actually covered this trial and the subsequent sentencing of Ulices Guevara, who pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and was sentenced to three years probation. He was sentenced back in July. Guevara was initially charged by the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office with felony gross vehicular manslaughter after he, while working as a part-time security guard, drove his vehicle through the grounds of the Las Palmas Swap Meet striking and killing 58-year-old Mexicali woman Estella Aguilar Jaramillo.

Two or three years ago there was a horrific head-on, wrong-way crash on the Interstate 8 westbound lanes between Imperial Avenue and Fourth Street. I never heard or read any result of the investigation into the cause or the reason the driver took the wrong approach. — Curious, El Centro This was one of the most bizarre accidents that we can remember in quite some time, and to be honest, we forgot about it. In fact, we thought it was odd that we even got this question, and we wondered why at this time.

A two-car accident at Eighth Street and Ross Avenue was reported at 1:17 p.m. Saturday. Firefighter Johnny Ramero, who was one of the firefighters sent to the scene, said no one in the two involved vehicles was hurt. One was an SUV, which was on its side on the sidewalk, and the other a smaller car in the middle of the intersection, he said. Ramero said it wasn't clear what had caused the accident. He said that by the time the one engine and squad arrived on the scene the people iinvolved had already exited their cars.

IMPERIAL - Two people were hospitalized and traffic slowed on Highway 86  here after three cars collided Friday morning south of Barioni Boulevard. The cars collided about 11:20 a.m. near the intersection, said Imperial police Officer Jerry Rocha. Two people were taken by ground ambulance to El Centro Regional Medical Center. The accident was still under investigation when police left the scene, he said. Traffic was limited to one lane while emergency crews were at the scene.

A man from Germany is dead after his off-highway vehicle rolled over Friday afternoon near Gecko Road near Glamis, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. Edgar Norbert Hecht, 49, of Veitshoechheim, Germany, was riding his 2006 Kawasaki KFX 400 four-wheeler south of Highway 78, according to the press release. He was driving about 40 miles per hour a little after 5 p.m., but lost control of his vehicle and overturned several times. He sustained blunt-force trauma to his head and torso, according to the press release.

Staff Writer A woman was injured Thursday in El Centro when the sport-utility vehicle she was driving was struck by a car whose driver pulled from a stop sign into the path of the SUV. The collision occurred about 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and La Brucherie Road. According to the El Centro police Sgt. Mike Beltran, the SUV driven by Elena Alcaraz, 43, of El Centro was headed north on La Brucherie when the car, driven by Mathew Sturts, 42, of Imperial pulled into its path heading west from the stop sign at Euclid.

Two people were airlifted Tuesday around noon after a collision west of Calexico. Two vehicles collided around 11:45 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 98 and Drew Road south of Seeley. Fire fighters and emergency medical technicians were treating people at the scene.

HEBER — One of the vehicles involved in a two-car collision hit a support wire for an electrical line that resulted in electrical service being momentarily disrupted Wednesday afternoon. The outage lasted about 40 seconds, according to those at the scene. It is unknown how many homes lost electricity as a result of the accident at Fawcett and Dogwood roads here. A man on a motorcycle who was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer fled the scene Monday morning and was soon after involved in a single-vehicle traffic accident on westbound Interstate 8 east of Holtville. Jonathan R. Duran, 20, of Yuma sustained moderate injuries including lacerations to his face and arms after an accident while driving a 2003 Yamaha R-1, according to a Highway Patrol news release. Before the accident at about 8:20 a.m. he was allegedly driving above the posted speed limit of 70 miles per hour on the Interstate.

A 19-year-old Cedar City resident and a 13-year-old El Centro resident suffered minor injuries following a vehicle accident Friday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. Fernando Lopez, the 19-year-old driver, was driving eastbound on Interstate 8 east of Coyote Wells at a stated speed of 69-70 miles per hour, according to the press release. The El Centro resident was a passenger in the vehicle. The Toyota Yaris drifted off the roadway and into the center median, where the vehicle collided with a tree, according to the press release.

A California Highway Patrol officer sustained minor injuries after she was rear ended while providing traffic control at an Interstate 8 on-ramp in El Centro on Monday, according to a news release from the highway patrol. About 5:45 p.m. CHP Officer D. Melancon was in a fully marked CHP patrol vehicle and was stopped on the Fourth Street on-ramp to westbound Interstate 8 with the vehicle's emergency lights activated, according to the news release. She was providing traffic control for a wide-load vehicle which was traveling on westbound Interstate 8. A Toyota Camry driven by 32-year-old Julia Mason entered the Fourth Street on-ramp, followed by a Nissan pick-up truck driven by 19-year-old Roman Ochoa of Calexico, according to the news release.

A single-vehicle traffic accident north of Imperial resulted in the death of a Calexico resident early Sunday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. The 27-year-old female, who was not identified, was ejected from the vehicle she was traveling in and sustained fatal injuries, according the press release.  The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Jarzita Mata of Brawley, was traveling southbound and appeared to have driven onto the shoulder of the highway and over corrected to the left, according to the press release.

ICE agent Lee, El Centro Sector, was arrested several months back for felony drunk driving due to an injured person in the accident. Has he appeared in court? And if so, what was the outcome of the appearance? I have heard he was not booked into the county jail, i.e., no booking number for this crime. Could you check and see what is happening with his case. Also, give some info regarding the booking info. I hope this is not another case an ICE agent going free, being promoted and then moved to a new location.  - Keep Government Honest, Westmorland There is an active legal case under way against Homeland Security Investigations Agent Thomas Lee. The reporter covering the case put a call in to the Imperial County District Attorney's Office to see where in the trial phase the case stands.

Family and friends of a local U.S. Border Patrol agent are in mourning after he died Sunday after trying to save a woman at a waterfall pool in Hawaii, according to various news reports. El Centro Sector Border Patrol Agent Kris Gungon, 31, of Imperial was swimming at Waimea Falls in Oahu while on vacation with family when a woman became distressed around 4:15 p.m. Gungon went in to help her but disappeared below the surface. Lifeguards were able to save the woman. Emergency responders found his body roughly 25 feet underwater, and the cause of death remains under investigation.

A man freed himself from his truck and swam out of the Highline Canal near Highway 78 after his truck fell in during an early morning accident today, a California Highway Patrol officer said. The man identified as Alejandro Cortez, suffered a laceration to his face and legs and complained of pain but the injuries were minor, according to Ernesto Ruedas, California Highway Patrol public information officer.  Cortez was transported to a local hospital. The accident happened shortly after 6 a.m. when the Brawley resident was driving an F-350 truck eastbound and for unknown reasons drifted off the roadway.

 A 28-year-old male had to be transferred to a Palm Springs hospital with major injuries to his head and torso today following a single vehicle accident near Forrester and Monte roads, a California Highway Patrol release said. The El Centro man driving a Ford F-150 truck was going northbound on Forrester Road shortly before 4 a.m. when for unknown reasons he veered into the southbound shoulder, according to the release. The vehicle went into a northeasterly skid and collided with an irrigation ditch causing the vehicle to overturn.
